The Emerging Markets Private Equity Quarterly Review

The Emerging Markets Private Equity Quarterly Review is an analytical and factual look at private equity investing in the emerging markets of Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.

Current Issue Feature Article:

Stress Ahead for Emerging Market GPs and Their LPs

How hard will the global financial crisis hit emerging markets private equity? This question is on the minds of many emerging market GPs and their LPs, as dour predictions for global recession pile up, and liquidity becomes an ever scarcer resource. Unlike so many down-turns in recent years, the financial crisis of 2008 arose in the United States, not in the developing world, but that may offer little comfort to the emerging markets PE industry, during a moment when risk aversion is spiking and institutional investors are suffering big losses.

Predicting '09 Fundraising
Perhaps the area of greatest concern for emerging market GPs, as they assess the fallout of the crisis, is fundraising. Will global PE/VC commitments drop in 2009? If so, will emerging market funds capture more or less than the roughly 12% share they've held of global fundraising in recent years? Will LPs pursue fewer new GPs and cut back on re-ups to their existing partnerships?
