Private Equity HUB -- private equity hub (10/07/08)

Aureos Capital has invested US$10 million in Kazakh equipment leasing company Leasing Group and US$5 million in Kyrgyz television network Ala TV. The investments were the first made by the Aureos Central Asia Fund.

"Swicorp Acquires Strategic Stake in Leading Algerian Distributor of Fuel and Related Products" (Africa)

Saudi Arabia-based Swicorp has acquired a stake in Petroser, the leading privately-held distributor of fuel and related products in Algeria. The investment was made through Intaj Capital, Swicorp's US$250 million private equity vehicle focusing on sectors driven by growth in consumer demand in the Middle East and North Africa. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"Brazil Cosan Raises US$180 Million via Private Placement" (Latin America and the Caribbean)
Reuters (10/02/08)

Brazil-based asset management company Gavea Investimentos will invest up to US$130 million in Cosan, one of Brazil's top sugar and ethanol groups. The controlling shareholder of Cosan, Rubens Ometto Silveira Mello, will invest an additional US$50 million.

US-based private equity firm Emerging Capital Partners has bought a minority stake in Togo-based regional commercial bank Financial BC SA (FBC) for US$28 million. FBC operates 20 branches in Benin, Togo, Gabon, Chad and Guinea.

Dubai-based buyout firm Abraaj Capital has completed the first closing of its fourth fund. The fund has raised about $3 billion in commitments from investors in the Middle East and North Africa and will seek additional capital from international investors.

International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Ukraine-based private equity firm Horizon Capital have invested US$15 million in Evrotek Group, an operator of food retail stores in Ukraine. Horizon's investment was made through the Emerging Europe Growth Fund.

Czech Republic-based Arx Equity Partners has invested in two local rope producers, acquiring a majority stake in Lanex and a 100 percent stake in Singing Rock. Separately, Arx has sold its 100 percent stake in Slovenia-based Donit Tesnit, a leading producer of compressed sealing materials, to an affiliate of Slovenia-based Mohar Satler Investments, generating a threefold return on the original investment made in 2006.

M'Sharie, the private equity subsidiary of Dubai Investments, has acquired a 51 percent stake in Anchor Allied, the largest manufacturer of adhesive tapes and specialty adhesives in the UAE. The value of the deal was not disclosed.

"Premji Invest Picks Up 3 Percent Stake in NSE for US$100 Million" (Asia)

Premji Invest, an investment firm established by Azim Premji, the chairman of India-based IT company Wipro, has picked up a 3 percent stake in India's National Stock Exchange (NSE) for US$100 million. Goldman Sachs, General Atlantic and Softbank Asian Infrastructure Fund each have a 5 percent stake in the bourse.
