"The Carlyle Group Acquires 50 Percent Stake in Turkish Company" (Central and Eastern Europe and Russia)

The Carlyle Group announced its first investment in Turkey, the acquisition of a 50 percent stake in shipbuilder TVK Shipyard for an undisclosed amount. TVK specializes in the construction of chemical tankers and other specialty vessels.

"Transaction Capital Acquires 31 Percent of Alliance" (Africa)

Financial services group Transaction Capital acquired a 31 percent stake in South Africa-based auction and asset services specialist Alliance Group. Alliance and Transaction Capital will work together to form a special private equity team that will focus on acquisitions. The joint venture is finalizing the launch of a US$66.2 million fund to help struggling homeowners and businesses to avoid foreclosure.

"Waha Capital and Abraaj Capital Enter Into Strategic Partnership for GMMOS Group" (Middle East)

Abu Dhabi-based holding company Waha Capital acquired a 49 percent strategic stake in GMMOS Group from private equity-firm Abraaj Capital. GMMOS is involved in the marine, crane-hire and oil and gas sectors in the Gulf and Caspian markets. Nine percent of the strategic investment was acquired from the US$500 million Abraaj Buyout Fund II, with the other 40 percent coming from exiting investors in the co-investment vehicle.

"Warburg Pincus Acquires 5.4 Percent of WuXi PharmaTech" (Asia)
MarketWatch (07/14/08)

Warburg Pincus acquired 5.4 percent of Chinese pharmaceutical company WuXi PharmaTech's outstanding ordinary shares for an undisclosed price. The global private equity firm purchased approximately 26.8 million ordinary shares in WuXi from affiliates of United Overseas Bank. WuXi helps clients in China and the United States shorten research and development time and cost for drugs and medical devices.

Mekong Capital's Mekong Enterprise Fund II will invest US$2.5 million in Vietnam's Cong Vang Trade Services Joint Stock Company, operator of the Ashima Restaurant chain. Mekong will also offer the expanding restaurant operator consulting on human resources, corporate restructuring and financial management.

"Emerging Capital Partners Provides Funding to African Salt Production, Export Company" (Africa)

International private equity firm Emerging Capital Partners (ECP) invested US$30 million in Djibouti-based Salt Investment S.A. The investment will allow Salt Investment to purchase equipment and construct facilities near Lake Assal, the largest undeveloped salt reserve in the world. The investment was made through the ECP Africa Fund II, which raised US$525 million for investment in a variety of African sectors.

Singapore-based property developer CapitaLand has launched a US$1 billion private equity fund that will invest in China. The Raffles City China Fund, which may be increased to a maximum of US$1.3 billion, will invest in mixed-use commercial properties in a number of Chinese cities.

U.S.-based WL Ross & Co. LLC announced an investment of US$80 million in SpiceJet Ltd., one of the leading low-cost airlines in India. Company Chairman Wilbur L. Ross Jr. and WL Ross India CEO Ranjit Nabha are expected to join SpiceJet's board of directors.

"World Bank Beams Infrastructure Investments to Latin America" (Latin America and the Caribbean)

The World Bank's International Finance Corp. is investing a combination of equity and financing, alongside several other investors, in the Corporacion Interamericana para el Financiamiento de Infraestructura (CIFI), an infrastructure project finance institution focused on small to mid-sized projects in Latin America. Infrastructure has attracted significant investor interest, with 70 private equity funds globally focused on the sector, raising a total of US$89 billion in capital. In June, Merrill Lynch estimated that the market for infrastructure projects would continue to grow, with investments in emerging markets expected to be about US$2.25 trillion over the next three years.
