"Morgan Unit, Ontario Fund to Acquire PSEG Subsidiary" (Latin America and the Caribbean)

Morgan Stanley Infrastructure and the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan have agreed to jointly acquire SAESA, the Chilean subsidiary of Public Service Enterprise Group, in a deal valued at close to US$1.3 billion. SAESA provides electric service to some 2.6 million people, or about 16 percent of Chile's population. Emerging markets are increasingly turning to private equity to fund infrastructure modernization efforts. According to Private Equity Intelligence, funds raised to invest in infrastructure worldwide increased to US$31 billion in 2007 from US$7 billion in 2005.

"NBK Capital Buys 40% of Leading Saudi Transport Company, Hanco" (Middle East)

The investment bank NBK Capital has acquired 40% ownership in Al-Tala'a International Transportation Company Ltd, (Hanco), a leading Saudi car rental, leasing, and fleet maintenance company. The share acquisition was made through NBK Capital's private equity fund, NBK Capital Equity Partners Fund.

"PE Major Actis Invests $25 Million in Real Estate Firm" (Asia)

Actis, a private equity fund in the United Kingdom, is investing US$25 million in real estate developer Vaishnavi Group, based in Bangalore. The investment is being made from the company's US$300 million India real estate fund. The Vaishnavi Group will utilize the funds to set up a special purpose vehicle (SPV) to develop a one million square foot mixed- use project at Yeshwantpur, a suburb of Bangalore.

"Al Khayyat, Rasmala Investments and RHT Acquire 13 Percent Stake in Taaleem" (Middle East)

Al Khayyat, Rasmala Investments, and RHT Partners have jointly acquired a 13 percent stake in Taaleem, formerly Madaares, a Bahrain-based company that builds and manages schools with the goal of enhancing the quality and standards of the regional education sector. The transaction gives Al Khayyat Investments a combined 25 percent stake in Taaleem.

Czech-Slovak private equity firm Penta Investments has reached an agreement to sell its stake in KSC Holding to Flughafen Wien AG for an undisclosed sum. KSC Holdings owns a 66 percent stake in Kosice International Airport in eastern Slovakia.

U.S.-based private equity firm Warburg Pincus has agreed to acquire a 10 percent stake in Chinese mobile phone manufacturer Beijing Tianyu for about US$70 million. Beijing Tianyu holds the largest market share in China among domestic mobile phone makers.

Alexander Forbes Insurance Brokers is changing its business name to Eagle Kenya following a fallout with its Johannesburg-based parent, Alexander Forbes South Africa. Alexander Forbes South Africa's (AFSA's) 40 percent stake in Eagle Kenya is expected to convey to a consortium of private equity investors, led by British firm Actis, who acquired Alexander Forbes South Africa three months ago. With local shareholders having fought to retain management control in the company, the new shareholders are expected to try to sell the stake to local investors

"Hines Buys 50% Stake in Brazil's DMO Engenharia, Valor Says" (Latin America and the Caribbean)

The Texas-based real estate company Hines has purchased a 50 percent stake in the Brazilian construction company DMO Engenharia e Empreendimentos for as much as US$18 million, according to the newspaper Valor Economico. For the first time in its 50-year history, Hines bought the company with its own funds and without using private equity.

"Hungary Attracts EUR491 Million In Private Equity Investment In 2007" (Central and Eastern Europe and Russia)

The Hungarian Venture Capital Association (HVCA) reports that Hungary's private equity and venture capital sector attracted EUR491 million of investment in 2007, second only to EUR535 million in 2006 in the nation's history. The association states that 93% of the 2007 total came from foreign venture capital and private equity sources, with the chemicals industry alone accounting for 45% of the invested capital received. New capital is also expected to pour in from European Union funds to Hungary in 2008, and attract more venture capital funds.

U.S.-based Global Environment Fund has invested US $20 million in convertible debt in Red Ambiental, an integrated solid waste management company based in Monterrey, Mexico. The investment was made through Global Environment Emerging Markets Fund III, a private equity fund focused on investments in clean energy, environmental services, and health care companies in emerging markets.
