Broken BRICs? The Future of Private Equity in the BRIC Economies
Tuesday, 7 April 2009
10:00 EST / 15:00 GMT

In light of intense investor interest in how the global slowdown is affecting private equity in Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC), the Emerging Markets Private Equity Association (EMPEA) presents Broken BRICs?, a new webcast series that will assess the challenges and opportunities faced by fund managers and limited partners engaged in these markets.

The series kick-off with Brazil. Brazil's stock market plunged 41% in 2008, and the IMF forecasts a dramatic slowdown in growth in 2009. The Brazilian real has lost one-third of its value since August 2008, and interest rates hover at 13%. Yet EMPEA research shows investor interest in Brazil is resilient. Antonio Bonchristiano, CEO, GP Investments; Patrice Etlin, Managing Partner, Advent International; Alvaro Goncalves, Managing Partner, Grupo Stratus; and Marcus Regueira, Founding Partner, FIR Capital, will explain in more depth the outlook in Brazil.

Corporate Governance in Emerging Markets Private Equity
Thursday, 19 February 2009
10:00 EST / 15:00 GMT

The benefits of high standards in corporate governance tend to outweigh the costs from both fund and portfolio company perspectives. Companies that adopt international best practices typically perform better and attract a wider range of investors. The adoption of high standards also enables firms to become better business partners and unlocks higher valuation for portfolio assets as managers seek exits. In spite of these perceived benefits, corporate governance standards in emerging markets still lag far behind those of developed markets.
