"ICICI Pays US$800 Million for Jaypee Infra Stake"

In what's being called the largest private equity deal to date in India, ICICI Venture Funds has acquired a 10-15 percent stake in Jaypee Infratech, a unit of real estate and infrastructure developer Jaypee Group, for US$800 million. ICICI Venture currently manages over US$2 billion in assets and has plans to manage assets worth US$10 billion by 2010. ICICI is one of the leading private equity players in India, recently having acquired a stake in Karvy Consultants for US$100 million, its largest deal in India prior to the Jaypee Infratech stake acquisition. Jaypee Infratech was established by Jaypee Group to complete a 165 kilometer expressway in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and has the right to develop land and real estate along the route.

Aureos Capital has held the first closing of its Central Asia Fund with US$50 million in committed capital. The fund is expected to have its final close in June 2008 with US$100 million. The fund will focus on the manufacturing, consumer goods, and general services sectors of Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Georgia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Aureos Capital specializes in investments in small and midsize businesses in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

"SK Telecom Acquires US$1.2 Billion Hanaro Telecom Stake From AIG and Newbridge"

SK Telecom has agreed to acquire a 38.9 percent stake in South Korea's second leading broadband service provider, Hanaro Telecom, from a consortium led by private equity firms AIG and Newbridge Capital for US$1.2 billion. The consortium acquired the stake in 2003 for US$500 million.

"NBK Fund Sells Yudum Foods"

Kuwait-based private equity firm NBK Capital has agreed to sell its 100 percent stake in leading Turkish packaged edible oils company Yudum Foods to Jordan-based Afia International for US$70.7 million. The deal is expected to close during the first quarter of 2008. NBK Capital focuses on investments in the GCC, Turkey and Egypt.

"Providence Equity Partners Invests Over US$200 Million in Volia Cable"

Global private equity firm Providence Equity Partners will invest upwards of US$200 million to acquire a majority stake of Aquorn Holding Limited, the Cyprus-based owner of Volia Cable, a leading Ukrainian cable television and Internet service provider. Voila is managed by SigmaBleyzer's UGF III Fund. The investment is reported to be the largest by a Western private equity firm in the Ukraine to date. SigmaBleyzer has made investments in over 80 companies in the Ukraine since 1994.

"Russia Agrika Selling 25 Percent Stake to Standard Bank, Two Funds"

South Africa's Standard Bank, Franklin Templeton, and Russia Partners Management, a direct investment vehicle managed by fund of funds manager Siguler Guff, are jointly acquiring a 25 percent stake in Russia's Agrika Foods for US$75 million. Agrika is a producer of meat and poultry products, frozen foods, formula feed, and protein-vitamin mixes.

"Venture Partners Looks for Second Fund"

Venture capital firm Venture Partners Botswana is in the process of raising a pan-Africa fund with a target of EUR150 million that will focus on countries such as Zambia, Namibia, and Angola. The first close of the fund is expected to occur in June with EUR60 million in committed capital. This will be Venture Partners Botswana's second fund. Its CEDA Venture Capital Fund has stakes in tanning firm Tannery Industries Botswana and Delta Dairies, the first established dairy manufacturing company in Botswana.

"Chinese Investment Firms Launching Fund"

Hope Investments and Suzhou Ventures Group of China are establishing the China-Singapore High-Tech Industrial Investment Fund that will focus on private equity investments in local biomedical and software companies. The fund is raising US$677.3 million initially but has already been approved by China's economic planning agency to double that amount.

Singapore-based private equity firm Orient Global will acquire a 22.5 percent stake in India Infoline Investment Services, the consumer finance arm of brokerage and financial services firm India Infoline, for US$76.7 million. India Infoline says it will use the investment to expand the presence of subsidiary Moneyline, a provider of personal and auto loans.

U.S. venture capital firm Intel Capital, a unit of chip maker Intel, has made an investment in Brazilian security company InfoServer. The terms of the deal were not disclosed. InfoServer is best known for producing mobile tokens, a password generating application that can be installed on cellphones. Intel Capital's other Latin American investments include Sysgold, Sonda, Spring Wireless, MVS Net, and Ativi.
